Common Ground: The Road Less Traveled

The Presence of God. Ruth and Naomi found themselves in very trying circumstances after each suffered the loss of a husband and the inescapable grief that accompanies death. Scripture gives us a snapshot into their lives and we get a glimpse of the strong bond of friendship that took place between Ruth and Naomi. Was it the deep sense of grief that brought these two women together in a way they had never experienced before? Perhaps these women were drawn to each other because they knew they were … [Read more...]

Bad News Made Good

My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back,  let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20 Bad news can be hard to hear but good to know. Consider Paul in Acts 23. He is being held by the Romans because they were looking for evidence to prove the accusations made by the Jewish leadership against him. While imprisoned forty Jewish leaders made an oath … [Read more...]

Who deserves kindness?

One more week until Christmas and it's filled with last minute shopping, wrapping paper strewn all about and finishing up the last few details for the family get-togethers (at least that's what it's like around here). I don't know about you but I feel like I'm in slow motion watching everyone rushing through the stores. It can definitely make you forget to slow down and show some kindness and I'm raising both my hands up high calling myself out on this. I found the saying below and was so in … [Read more...]

Bathroom Meditations

What is it about cleaning the bathroom that draws me close to God and allows me to hear His Spirit leading me, prompting me?  Don’t laugh, and don’t discount what I am saying.  Some of my best inspirations have occurred while cleaning the bathroom, and I know I’m not alone in this. I heard a well known preacher describe how her husband heard from God’s Holy Spirit while in the bathroom!!  Really?!?!?  That was my first reaction, too. However, now I notice that many of my moments of … [Read more...]

“Goodbye, Pride”

I was in the check out line at Walgreens.  I needed some face wash and lotion and of course, let's go for the age defying version.  The lady in front of me was finishing her transaction and getting ready to walk away, so I sat my items on the counter and started to grab my wallet.  "Glad I don't need that," the lady said to me with a chuckle. She gathered her bags and walked out of the store.  One question:  how do you respond to that?  Why do these people show up at my party? Pride.  I have … [Read more...]

“The Great Omission”

"Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (The Message). This passage of scripture is known as "The Great … [Read more...]

Knowing the Pruner

I was given the opportunity this week to really reflect on the inspiration behind my blog. Sometimes, it’s good to just remember your roots, to get back to the place it all began, and that’s exactly what I did. This time I found myself at the beginning of John chapter 15 where it talks about Jesus as the true vine. Verse 2 is what caught my attention. “Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” I’m … [Read more...]

Is Jesus Nice?

We like to believe in fairy tale moments, princess story endings and magical moments. We want to hope that life can be better than this. So when my pastor mentioned in brevity that “we don’t want a church filled with nice people,” I remember being completely stumped and caught off guard. To be completely honest, I DO want a church filled with just nice people. People who are willing to turn the other cheek and go out of their way to be like the good Samaritan. I want to be surrounded by … [Read more...]

Yes, God Loves You

I have a question.  I might make you a little uncomfortable.  Have you ever attended a funeral or memorial service where the deceased is “not” in a better place?  I know I haven’t.  Do we take the Grace of God for granted?  Do we believe in a heaven AND a hell?  The Bible says both exist and there are some key verses we should consider before we assume our loved ones will go to a better place. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to … [Read more...]

Guilt is the enemy’s most powerful weapon against Christians. It’s not the actual temptation, or the act of committing the sin itself, but what follows. I know this because I’ve been there before. A guilty Christian is exactly where Satan wants him. When I was struggling with guilt, I was as far away from God as I possibly could. Instead of drawing near to God to ask for His forgiveness, I beat myself up saying that I didn’t deserve His grace. Boy, was I wrong! Therefore, there is now no … [Read more...]
