“Goodbye, Pride”

I was in the check out line at Walgreens.  I needed some face wash and lotion and of course, let's go for the age defying version.  The lady in front of me was finishing her transaction and getting ready to walk away, so I sat my items on the counter and started to grab my wallet.  "Glad I don't need that," the lady said to me with a chuckle. She gathered her bags and walked out of the store.  One question:  how do you respond to that?  Why do these people show up at my party? Pride.  I have … [Read more...]

Knowing the Pruner

I was given the opportunity this week to really reflect on the inspiration behind my blog. Sometimes, it’s good to just remember your roots, to get back to the place it all began, and that’s exactly what I did. This time I found myself at the beginning of John chapter 15 where it talks about Jesus as the true vine. Verse 2 is what caught my attention. “Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” I’m … [Read more...]

Is Jesus Nice?

We like to believe in fairy tale moments, princess story endings and magical moments. We want to hope that life can be better than this. So when my pastor mentioned in brevity that “we don’t want a church filled with nice people,” I remember being completely stumped and caught off guard. To be completely honest, I DO want a church filled with just nice people. People who are willing to turn the other cheek and go out of their way to be like the good Samaritan. I want to be surrounded by … [Read more...]

Yes, God Loves You

I have a question.  I might make you a little uncomfortable.  Have you ever attended a funeral or memorial service where the deceased is “not” in a better place?  I know I haven’t.  Do we take the Grace of God for granted?  Do we believe in a heaven AND a hell?  The Bible says both exist and there are some key verses we should consider before we assume our loved ones will go to a better place. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to … [Read more...]

Guilt is the enemy’s most powerful weapon against Christians. It’s not the actual temptation, or the act of committing the sin itself, but what follows. I know this because I’ve been there before. A guilty Christian is exactly where Satan wants him. When I was struggling with guilt, I was as far away from God as I possibly could. Instead of drawing near to God to ask for His forgiveness, I beat myself up saying that I didn’t deserve His grace. Boy, was I wrong! Therefore, there is now no … [Read more...]

Counting the Cost

"I'm saying yes to You And no to my desires I'll leave myself behind And follow You" Those were the words I heard as I washed each dirty dish from the amazing weekend we just had. they caught me off guard. I stopped and looked at my phone, and saw "the cost" by rend collective. I had been listening to music all morning, singing along, but this was more than just a song. it made me slow down and think. Jesus wanted me to hear these words if I wasn't going to listen to his. the past … [Read more...]

Sweetly Broken

Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter.  And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch.  Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” John 10:22-30 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, … [Read more...]

How To Be Ready for Battle

It has been said that the best defense is a good offense. As I have continued to meditate on the Psalms this week, I believe that is true, but with a qualification. I have noticed that our strategies for life are often far too wearying for us because we end up on the offensive lines when we shouldn’t be. We become tired and overwhelmed, trudging after the Lord reluctantly. We excuse or eliminate ourselves from His battles because we have already been expended fighting when we were not called to … [Read more...]

Sundays are different for me…..

Sundays are different for a pastor's wife. It's a work day. She has to sit through all of the services, not just one; and for me that means 3 times I listen to my husbands sermon. It's really good the first time, but by the third time my mind wanders and I think "what are my cats doing right now; how many ceiling tiles are in the sanctuary; would anyone notice if I slipped out during the sermon so I could get to Publix to coupon?" The pastor's wife also is the go-between for her husband and … [Read more...]

What My Words Say About Me

Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians … [Read more...]
