When Life Seems too Difficult…

large_2271139062

I often listen to audio sermons while cleaning the house.  I am able to get the many ‘necessary’ things done, while engaging my mind and furthering my understanding of spiritual matters.  For the most part, this is a purely intellectual exercise – increasing my knowledge of scripture, but not really leading to transformative change.  Since I am busy, I often neglect to quiet myself before God, and ‘listen’ to what He might have to say to my heart on the matter.  Every once in a while though, I … [Read more...]

Blinding Gray

Revelation 3:16: Blinding Gray Revelation 3:16 has always been a bit of a mystery to me since middle school, but the Holy Spirit has been pushing me to ponder and ask the Lord about it. It says “So then, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out My mouth.” I can hear the Lords urgency and zealousness over me with a description that uses His name, my name, and vomit all in the same sentence. What is difficult to hear is the possible reason for His use of this type … [Read more...]

Are Family Devotions Important?

IMG_20150113_200037

Do you do devotions with your family? Truth be told I did not until several years ago. For me it is important to raise my children in the ways of the Lord. But the busyness of life kept me from taking time daily to talk with my kids much about the Lord. I mean face it. If you are not very intentional, you could go through life without teaching them a lot of things. The point is when you want your kids to learn something new, you are very intentional about making sure they are taught. God is not … [Read more...]

Common Ground: The Road Less Traveled

medium_8532245297

The Presence of God. Ruth and Naomi found themselves in very trying circumstances after each suffered the loss of a husband and the inescapable grief that accompanies death. Scripture gives us a snapshot into their lives and we get a glimpse of the strong bond of friendship that took place between Ruth and Naomi. Was it the deep sense of grief that brought these two women together in a way they had never experienced before? Perhaps these women were drawn to each other because they knew they were … [Read more...]

Uncharted Territory

Happy New Year! These are the words ringing from every direction today.  Last night we kissed 2014 goodbye and said hello to a fresh new year.  Some people were happy to see it go.  Some were hoping the same good fortune of 2014 would follow them to the next. But whatever way we said goodbye to the old and hello to the new, what we all have in common is that this New Year is uncharted territory.  Not one of us knows the twists and turns that may occur this year.  Not one of us can plan for … [Read more...]

Bad News Made Good

My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back,  let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20 Bad news can be hard to hear but good to know. Consider Paul in Acts 23. He is being held by the Romans because they were looking for evidence to prove the accusations made by the Jewish leadership against him. While imprisoned forty Jewish leaders made an oath … [Read more...]

Who deserves kindness?

One more week until Christmas and it's filled with last minute shopping, wrapping paper strewn all about and finishing up the last few details for the family get-togethers (at least that's what it's like around here). I don't know about you but I feel like I'm in slow motion watching everyone rushing through the stores. It can definitely make you forget to slow down and show some kindness and I'm raising both my hands up high calling myself out on this. I found the saying below and was so in … [Read more...]

Bathroom Meditations

God_Humility_Word_Cloud

What is it about cleaning the bathroom that draws me close to God and allows me to hear His Spirit leading me, prompting me?  Don’t laugh, and don’t discount what I am saying.  Some of my best inspirations have occurred while cleaning the bathroom, and I know I’m not alone in this. I heard a well known preacher describe how her husband heard from God’s Holy Spirit while in the bathroom!!  Really?!?!?  That was my first reaction, too. However, now I notice that many of my moments of … [Read more...]

“Goodbye, Pride”

IMG_2796

I was in the check out line at Walgreens.  I needed some face wash and lotion and of course, let's go for the age defying version.  The lady in front of me was finishing her transaction and getting ready to walk away, so I sat my items on the counter and started to grab my wallet.  "Glad I don't need that," the lady said to me with a chuckle. She gathered her bags and walked out of the store.  One question:  how do you respond to that?  Why do these people show up at my party? Pride.  I have … [Read more...]

“The Great Omission”

david

"Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (The Message). This passage of scripture is known as "The Great … [Read more...]
